New data from HMR Research shows that the 9 million movies have been sold on Blu-ray since inception of the format in the United States, with 3 million of those having been sold during the first 11 weeks of this year. If this trend continues, Blu-ray is poised to sell nearly 15 million units in this year alone. The recent release of blockbuster Hollywood movies on Blu-ray has boosted overall sales. The Miramax release of 'No Country for Old Men' sold 68,000 copies on Blu-ray during its first week of sales, a huge accomplishment for a format where previous top sellers this year were selling only 30,000 copies during their first week of sales. As more highly anticipated titles get released onto store shelves, such as Fox's April 15th release of 'Juno', sales are expected to continue to grow throughout the remainder of the year.
